The trigger drill

Because the swing is easier to start when it has already begun

The Trigger Drill helps initiate a smooth, tension-free swing. It gives the body a small starting move so the club does not have to launch from a dead stop. Dead stops are where tension gets comfortable.

The trigger is simple. Start the club slightly forward. Press into the lead foot. Let that rebound into the trail side and carry the club back. Motion creates motion. The swing starts before the brain can ruin the mood.

Steps

  1. Set up to the ball.

  2. Move the clubhead about a foot in front of the ball, toward the target.

  3. Press into your lead foot, then let the pressure rebound into your trail foot as you start your backswing.

  4. Swing through a balanced finished.

  5. Repeat until the motion feels smooth, continuous, and athletic.

Note

This is not a position drill. It is a motion drill.

Press. Rebound. Swing. The point is to remove the frozen moment over the ball, not add another little thing to babysit.

Use anytime your swing starts feeling stiff, noisy, or over-managed.

Caution

Do not make the trigger huge. If the lead-foot press turns into a lunge, the body can slide, the club can get dragged our of rhythm, and the whole drill becomes a tiny parade in the wrong direction.
