three position drill
A face contact drill that teaches the clubface to find the center in not-so-perfect setups
The Three Position Drill changes the address, but not the task: Find the center. Toe-side setup, heel-side setup, normal setup. Same task. No reaching, no rescuing, no Plastic Man arms sneaking the club into place. Move the whole setup, then see if the clubface can still find the sweet spot.
Do this for all your clubs—wedges, irons, woods, driver. It is especially useful for driver, where off-center contact has a flair for drama.
Instructions—
Set up with the clubface on the toe side of the ball. Swing for center contact.
Set up with the clubface on the heel side of the ball. Swing for center contact.
Set up normally. Swing for center contact.
If you can successfully complete the drill two in a row, move on to the next club.
You might want to challenge yourself by combining this drill with the Towel Drill.
For your driver, spray the clubface with foot powder. The powder leaves a tiny impact stamp, which is far more honest than guessing and far less expensive than a launch monitor.
