the step drill
The Jumping Jacks of golf that sneaks in an added benefit
The Step Drill is a warm-up disguised as a lesson in how the body moves weight through the swing. It wakes up the body. It quietly finds the swing arc’s low point (the secret to a functional ground contact). And, surprisingly to most, lays the foundation for a swing speed that feels less forced.
Do this with or without a ball.
Instructions—
Setup to the ball.
Step to bring your lead foot next to your trail foot.
Begin your backswing.
As your lead arm reaches parallel, start stepping your lead foot towards the target.
Continue to the top of your backswing.
Swing through finish.
Note—The lead foot step towards the target should begin before the downswing, not after. Let the shift lead the swing instead of chasing it with a late foot stomp.
